An Equine Therapy Story

Using a collaborative approach the Eagala Model incorporates a licensed Mental Health Professional and a qualified Equine Specialist working together with horses and clients as equal partners in an experiential process that empowers life changing outcomes.

This past summer For The Silent offered and had their first Equine Therapy group that used the Eagala Model. The group consisted of five females, ages 13-16 and lasted ten weeks. Each girl got to pick out their very own pair of cowboy boots prior to starting Equine Therapy and they were thrilled and thankful that For The Silent was able to provide this for them. For most of them it was their first time to be around a horse. It was a privilege to watch the girls learn more about themselves and share their thoughts and feelings. These girls were so creative when given a task to do with their horses. It was heartwarming to see how quickly each girl bonded with the horses. Because of this week after week, they always chose to work with the same horse.

These girls began equine therapy reserved and unsure of what to expect. Through Equine Therapy the girls were able to learn to manage their emotions and express themselves more positively. Watching their self-esteem and communication skills improve was such a delight. These girls amazed me with their problem-solving skills. We ended the last session with a special celebration complete with cupcakes and framed certificates. It was pure joy to be a part of For The Silent first Equine Therapy group and we look forward to the next group starting soon.
